SCARLETT

I was in love. With this town, not Wes. Okay, maybe I was a little in love with him too.

“Which one of the hot lumberjacks are you dating?” a beautiful young mom named Skylar asked. Her four-year-old had eaten a full fritter in just a few bites. “Aiden? Tucker?”

“Tucker’s with Hannah,” a woman named Kenzie said. “Keep up.”

She jabbed Skylar with her elbow. It was all in good fun. I couldn’t figure out if they were sisters or good friends, but their rapport made me smile.

“Scarlett is my roommate back in Durham,” Layna said. “She’s just here for the weekend.”

Layna handed over the bag of baked goods the women had purchased. She’d woken me up at the crack of dawn to go on an adventure with no idea I’d had a midnight adventure of my own.

I’d lost my virginity last night. And I couldn’t stop thinking about the man who’d taken it.

“Nobody wanted the love muffins,” Layna said as we watched the women gather their children and head to their SUVs. “We’re leaving with as many as we brought.”

“You’re at the wrong place to sell muffins to single people,” I said. “It was all kids and parents.”

Layna crossed her arms over her chest and stared thoughtfully off to the side for a long moment before saying, “You could pick out a mountain man. We’ll hand him one of these muffins, and he’s yours.”

“You just want me to have a reason to move here with the rest of you,” I said.

But I had to admit, my heart was racing at her words. No, I wouldn’t want Wes to fall in love with me simply because he’d bitten into a muffin. I wanted him to feel that naturally.

The problem was, he’d made clear he wasn’t the type to settle down and have kids. No way could I give up on motherhood. It had been something I’d dreamed about since I was in elementary school.

But how did I just walk away from here and forget what happened last night? I couldn’t.

I grabbed my tumbler and headed over to the coffee station. I needed more caffeine for this line of thinking. Lack of sleep was definitely getting to me.

“Maybe some of these guys like the single life.” I removed the lid to my tumbler. “Not everyone wants to get married and have kids.”

“That’s what the sweetheart muffin’s for,” Layna said. “One bite, and they change their mind.”

“Or maybe it’s just that the right woman came along at the right time.” I shrugged. “And that woman just happened to be standing nearby when he ate it.”

“That’s why you need to come over here and serve this guy,” Layna said.

I was returning the lid to my now-full tumbler when those words made their way to me. Frowning, I turned, not sure what she meant. But what I saw out the window did more to wake up my brain than any dose of caffeine could do. Wes was standing there, staring right at me. Layna was staring at me too, no doubt wondering what was going on.
